FAQ

Commercial Concrete Contractor FAQ

What does a commercial concrete contractor self-perform?

Harrowgate self-performs and manages survey layout, excavation interfaces, base preparation, formwork, reinforcing, embeds, concrete placement, consolidation, finishing, jointing, curing, protection, testing coordination, deficiency repair, and closeout. The exact scope covers structural concrete, slabs, foundations, site concrete, and heavy-civil work shown in the issued documents.

What information is needed for a concrete quote?

Provide structural, architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and equipment drawings, specifications, geotechnical information, schedules, finish requirements, testing, phasing, access, concrete mix criteria, reinforcing schedules, embed details, and restoration limits. Harrowgate performs a coordinated takeoff so openings, slopes, joints, edges, and buried interfaces are included.

How is concrete quality checked before a pour?

Harrowgate completes a pre-pour review of subgrade, forms, dimensions, elevations, reinforcing, cover, laps, embeds, waterstops, joints, access, equipment, weather protection, mix, placement sequence, finishing, testing, and cure. Hold points are closed before ordering concrete, and the pour record ties deliveries and field tests to exact locations.

How long before commercial concrete takes traffic?

Traffic timing depends on concrete strength gain, slab or pavement design, temperature history, curing, loading, equipment, and the engineer’s requirements. Harrowgate protects the placement until the specified release criteria are met. Calendar age alone does not prove that a loading dock, equipment base, slab, or pavement is ready.

How are cold-weather concrete placements managed?

Harrowgate uses an approved cold-weather plan covering heated materials where specified, snow and ice removal, substrate temperature, enclosure, wind protection, concrete temperature, placement rate, curing, temperature monitoring, and gradual protection removal. Frozen subgrade and unplanned dilution are not accepted. Requirements follow CSA A23.1 and the project specification.

Why are joints critical in slabs and pavements?

Joints create planned locations for movement, construction stops, isolation, and load transfer. Their type, spacing, depth, timing, reinforcement, dowels, and sealant interface come from the design. Harrowgate lays them out before the pour and cuts or forms them at the required time without interrupting drains, columns, equipment, or traffic paths.

What concrete records are included at closeout?

Records include approved mixes, delivery tickets, placement maps, test reports, temperatures, air and slump results, curing logs, survey checks, inspection reports, embedded-item records, non-conformance reviews, and deficiency closeout. Harrowgate organizes them by pour and location for efficient review by the owner, engineer, and authority.
