Our Process

Our Process

A commercial concrete slab must carry its design loads, remain supported by uniform subgrade, control shrinkage at planned joints, meet floor-elevation and flatness criteria, and provide the correct surface for traffic or finishes. Harrowgate self-performs slab construction across the GTA with the complete base-to-cure sequence under direct field control.Slab scope is coordinated from the finished surface downward.

  1. 01 Send your inquiry, a few photos or a description of the site.
  2. 02 We come out, assess the site, take measurements, and confirm the scope.
  3. 03 We complete the commercial concrete slabs on site, to the load and finish the job needs.
  4. 04 We install it, finish to grade, and clean up, one accountable crew, start to finish.

FAQ

Commercial Concrete Slabs FAQ

How thick should a commercial concrete slab be?

Thickness is designed from rack, vehicle, partition, equipment, and concentrated loads together with subgrade support, joint spacing, and reinforcement strategy. Common commercial slabs are often 125 to 200 mm thick, but light service and heavy industrial areas differ. Harrowgate builds the thickness and thickened zones shown on the sealed drawings.

When should contraction joints be saw cut?

Cutting begins as soon as the slab is hard enough to avoid unacceptable raveling but before shrinkage creates random cracks. The window changes with mix, slab temperature, ambient conditions, finishing, and saw type. Harrowgate monitors each pour, starts with trial cuts, and keeps enough saw capacity to follow the setting front.

What causes a commercial slab to curl?

The slab curls when shrinkage or temperature differs between its top and bottom. Rapid surface drying, wide joint spacing, high shrinkage, delayed curing, and moisture gradients increase the effect. Harrowgate controls the mix, evaporation, curing start, joint layout, cut timing, and early exposure, while the engineer selects thickness and load-transfer details.

Can curing compound be used under floor coverings?

Only when the compound is compatible with the planned adhesive, coating, densifier, or polishing system and is accepted by the project specification. Some products can interfere with bond. Harrowgate coordinates the final floor assembly before the pour and uses wet curing, sheet curing, or an approved compound suited to that assembly.

How is slab flatness measured?

Random-traffic floors can be specified using overall and local F-number criteria under CSA A23.1, measured within the contract window on defined test sections. Sloped and defined-traffic floors require different methods. Harrowgate plans pour strips, screed passes, finishing, and measurement access around the exact acceptance criteria in the project documents.

Why is a vapour retarder needed under an interior slab?

A vapour retarder limits water vapour movement from the ground into the slab and occupied space. It is especially important under moisture-sensitive flooring, stored products, and conditioned facilities. Harrowgate seals seams and penetrations, protects the membrane during reinforcing work, and repairs punctures before they are concealed by concrete.

When can lifts, racks, or partitions be installed on a new slab?

Installation depends on achieved concrete strength, anchor design, slab thickness, joint location, equipment loads, and curing protection. Harrowgate coordinates cylinder results and engineer criteria, keeps heavy traffic off protected zones, and provides pour and joint information so anchors and rack posts are not placed blindly at slab edges or young concrete.
