Our scrap metal recovery sequence starts with verified site information, controlled work zones, and written acceptance points, then moves through field execution, consultant inspection, records, and restoration. We assign each material, asset, sample area, and load a defined status so crews know what can move, what must remain exposed, and who releases the next step.
Selective dismantling removes higher value nonferrous material and reusable components before bulk demolition. Pieces are lowered under controlled rigging, not dropped into active work areas. Excavator shears, processors, torches, saws, and hand tools reduce material to transportable sizes under the project hot work and fire control plan. Magnets separate ferrous material from concrete rubble. Dedicated bins prevent copper, aluminum, stainless, and mixed steel from cross contamination. Loads are inspected, photographed where required, weighed at the receiver, and matched to the project register.
Our supervisors treat diversion as production control. Bin placement, equipment access, labels, contamination checks, pickup timing, ticket collection, and quantity reconciliation appear in the site plan and daily log. Ontario Regulation 347 governs waste classification and includes construction and demolition steel among designated waste categories, subject to the regulation and any applicable reuse provisions. Ontario Regulation 103/94 can require steel source separation on designated projects, while Ontario Regulation 102/94 can require its inclusion in waste audits and reduction work plans. Structural dismantling and lifting follow the engineered demolition sequence and Ontario construction requirements. Receiving specifications control maximum dimensions, sealed vessels, prohibited attachments, residue, mixed grades, and documentation.
Ontario Regulation 347 defines and controls waste streams and receiving facilities. Designated construction and demolition projects may also fall under Ontario Regulation 102/94 for waste audits and reduction work plans and Ontario Regulation 103/94 for source separation. Excess soil is assessed separately under Ontario Regulation 406/19 and the Rules for Soil Management. We confirm the governing classification before hauling because soil, processed aggregate, recyclable material, and waste do not share one rule.
Scrap Metal Recovery fails when field production gets ahead of characterization, isolation, inspection, or documentation. Mixing alloys loses value, while concrete, rubber, wood, or insulation can cause downgrades. We verify de energization and draining, identify enclosed components, maintain exclusion zones, use planned cut and lift sequences, and inspect each pile. Owner retained metals are tagged and physically separated so they cannot leave in a scrap load.
We review the next two weeks of work against approvals, sampling, deliveries, shutdowns, and weather. Daily pre work discussions identify the exact limits and status of each area. Photographs and measurements are taken before concealment, and unresolved items stay visible on the field log until the responsible reviewer provides direction or acceptance.

Weather, laboratory turnaround, inspection availability, and working hours can also control production. The governing requirements depend on the material, property, equipment, and approval. The work can involve verified draining, cleaning, opening, and receiver acceptance before processing. We confirm the current project specific criteria with the engineer, Qualified Person, owner, municipality, or TSSA as applicable. A general industry practice never replaces the written requirement that governs the actual site.

We use receiver scale tickets matched to date, load, material stream, carrier, and project register. Work pauses until the condition is safe, isolated, and assigned a documented response. The supervisor records what changed, where it occurred, who provided direction, and how material or equipment was controlled, preventing an unexpected discovery from contaminating accepted work or disappearing from the record.
Yes, where the design permits it. We plan fuel, oil, batteries, refrigerant, insulation, process residue, or other separate streams. The operating boundary, shutdown windows, truck route, emergency access, controls, and daily handback condition are agreed before work starts. Production is staged so facility staff and construction crews do not share uncontrolled access to the work zone.
Closeout should include access, dismantling complexity, contamination, grade, market outlet, haul distance, and tonnage. Depending on the project, it can also include photographs, surveys, receiving records, inspection releases, operating logs, test results, redline drawings, and a list of remaining assets. The package supports the owner's consultant and operations team, but professional certifications remain with the appropriately qualified person.
