Our Process

Our Process

A dumpster and enclosure pad is a heavy-duty concrete slab designed for repeated truck wheels, steel container impact, caster loads, leakage, washing, and snow operations. Harrowgate self-performs GTA excavation, base, drainage, reinforced concrete, enclosure footings, bollards, aprons, and pavement tie-ins so the complete waste area carries operational loads and drains correctly.

FAQ

Dumpster and Enclosure Pads FAQ

Why does a dumpster pad need thicker concrete than a sidewalk?

Waste trucks impose heavy axle loads, braking, turning, and repeated impact, while containers create caster and drop loads. The structural engineer sizes slab thickness, reinforcement, base, and apron for those forces. Harrowgate builds the entire loading path so the truck does not destroy adjacent weak pavement at the pad edge.

Should the truck approach apron also be concrete?

Often yes, where front-load trucks repeatedly stop and turn during pickup. The civil and structural design determines apron length and width from wheel paths and operating geometry. Concrete only beneath the bin can leave asphalt at the highest wheel-load location, leading to rutting, settlement, and a damaging edge lip.

How should a dumpster enclosure drain?

The approved site plan establishes slope, collection point, and lawful discharge. Harrowgate grades the slab to prevent ponding and keeps gates or curbs from trapping water. Wash water and waste leakage may not be suitable for storm discharge, so drain type and connection are coordinated with municipal sewer-use and environmental requirements.

Can enclosure footings and slab be built together?

Yes, when the structural details and pour sequence allow it. Footings, grade beams, masonry reinforcing, gate posts, bollards, and slab joints must be coordinated so movement and loads are handled correctly. Harrowgate sets all embeds from a composite layout before concrete rather than drilling critical posts into an unknown slab edge.

How long must collection trucks stay off new concrete?

The restriction lasts until the concrete reaches the specified strength and curing condition for heavy service. Weather, mix, slab thickness, test results, and truck loads affect timing. Harrowgate arranges temporary waste service and barricades the pad so early pickup does not crack edges, damage joints, or rut the approach.

What causes dumpster enclosure gates to stop aligning?

Settlement, frost movement, post impact, inadequate footings, poor embed layout, and slab heave can shift gate geometry. Harrowgate corrects weak subgrade, builds designed post foundations, protects posts with bollards, verifies hinges and hold-open clearance, and maintains drainage so water does not undermine the gate line.

Can a failed dumpster pad be replaced while the property operates?

Yes. We coordinate temporary bin locations and collection dates, stage sawcut demolition, protect traffic and pedestrians, correct drainage and base, then pour and cure under a controlled closure. Gates, walls, compactors, or utilities can be phased where the design permits, reducing disruption to tenants and facility operations.
